Job Summary:

The M.A. in Urban and Public Affairs (UPA) at the University of San Francisco invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level beginning in August 2019. UPA is a dynamic, interdisciplinary program that trains students in public policy, urban studies and grassroots organizing, examining ways in which policy and community engagement can effect positive change.

We are seeking applications from candidates with a Ph.D. in Public Policy, Urban Studies or related fields, whose work centers on urban development, housing, and homelessness in the Bay Area. Preference will be given to applicants with a background in California Studies through the lens of race and/ or gender and political economy. We especially welcome applications from scholars with an activist perspective, who can articulate a local connection with their scholarly work and are able to bring community-engaged learning into their teaching.

Job Responsibilities:

The successful candidate must be able to teach core courses in the UPA program, including Research Methods, as well as the Introduction to Urban Studies course in the Urban Studies undergraduate program and elective courses in their area of expertise at the undergraduate and graduate level. The standard teaching load for this position at USF is two 4-unit courses per semester with an additional third course every fourth semester (2-2-2-3 over two years).

In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to direct the UPA program for at least one three-year term. Program Directors receive some course release time for their administrative duties. Additionally, all faculty are expected to engage in service to their department, college, and university, as well as maintain an active research program that engages both undergraduate and graduate students when possible.

Minimum Requirements:

Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant field by August 31, 2019 as well as have a minimum of three years of experience in directing an academic program. A strong record of teaching at the university level, evidence of scholarship, and an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University of San Francisco are required. In addition, successful applicants should demonstrate a commitment to public scholarship and engagement with the local community. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a strong Bay Area network for the purpose of placing students in relevant internships.
