Assistant Professor

William Paterson University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank in the Department of Public Health, beginning August 27, 2024.

Reporting to the Department of Public Health Chairperson, this position includes teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, research and scholarship, service, and appropriate activities to support student success.

The Department of Public Health is located in the College of Science and Health, one of four comprehensive and diverse colleges at William Paterson University. The Department of Public Health offers undergraduate programs in public health promotion and health studies and an online Master of Public Health (MPH) program. The department's undergraduate public health program is fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) as a standalone bachelor's program and prepares students for careers as public health generalists and health education specialists.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Teaching: responsibilities include but are not limited to delivering core undergraduate and graduate public health courses both online and in-person.
  • Course delivery, development, and assessment: engaging with faculty to ensure efficient organization of courses and coursework; teaching courses within the curriculum and developing courses and curriculum; engage in formal and informal processes of departmental assessment of student learning and programming.
  • Scholarship: conceptualizing, developing, executing, and maintaining a research agenda resulting in scholarly publications and presentations.
  • Service: actively participating in the variety of service opportunities within the department including accreditation activities, and participating in college, university, and community service; advising and mentoring students.


Required qualifications
  • Earned doctorate in public health or a public health discipline. Advanced ABD candidates who meet all other criteria may be considered for initial appointment at the rank of Instructor; to be considered for reappointment, the terminal degree must be completed by the time of review for reappointment to a second year by March 2025.
  • Documented evidence of excellence in college teaching.
  • Documented evidence of an active research agenda and published, peer-reviewed scholarship.
  • Ability to work effectively using online platforms such as Blackboard, Zoom, and Teams.


Preferred qualifications
  • Public health practice experience.
  • Background in one or more of the following: LGBTQIA health, drugs, tobacco, and alcohol prevention, reproductive health, health disparities, quantitative methods.
  • Experience teaching in traditional in-person and online course formats.
  • Experience with the CEPH accreditation process.
  • Current certification as CHES or MCHES.
