ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY
Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education

ABOUT THIS POSITION

Summary: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Colorado Mesa University invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Mathematics Education. Colorado Mesa University is a comprehensive regional public higher education institution with a B.S. program in Mathematics with separate concentrations in Mathematics, Secondary Education, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Actuarial Science.

For this position, we seek a highly motivated, teaching-centered colleague who will actively engage with students. Applicants must have an academic background in mathematics education or other experience related to the scholarship of teaching and learning. Applicants must also have the ability to teach undergraduate mathematics courses including those serving our elementary and secondary teacher preparation programs and should demonstrate effective pedagogical strategies. Examples of courses include a sequence of mathematics courses for future elementary teachers as well as Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries and history of mathematics for secondary teachers.

The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester; courses may be assigned as in-person, online, hybrid, or via distance delivery modalities. Scholarship in the discipline, involvement with advising, and service to the department and profession are expected.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach undergraduate-level mathematics courses with a particular focus on courses for future elementary and secondary teachers.

Engage in scholarly activity related to mathematics education.

Serve as a mentor for undergraduate student research projects and activities.

Provide student academic advising and evaluation.

Remain current on state standards and institutional requirements for teacher preparation programs.

Participate in professional development activities.

Engage in service to the department, university, and profession.

Perform other program and department-level duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in Mathematics Education, Statistics Education, or Mathematics. Degree should be completed by August 2024.

An academic background in mathematics education, as demonstrated by dissertation topic or current scholarly activities, and recent teaching experience.

Experience teaching undergraduate mathematics courses.

Interest and ability to teach lower-division service courses such as College Algebra, mathematics courses for liberal arts majors, or introductory statistics.

Demonstrated commitment to and enthusiasm for teaching.

Effective communication and organizational skills.



Preferred Qualifications:
Experience teaching mathematics courses for future elementary teachers is preferred.

Experience teaching K-12 mathematics is valued.

Preference will be given to candidates with excellent communication skills, a record of outstanding teaching of undergraduate mathematics, and the ability to teach a variety of undergraduate courses, especially those that serve future teachers.

Evidence of dedication to scholarship, particularly in the mentoring of undergraduate projects, and a demonstrated commitment to service activities will help to further distinguish the applicant.
