Basic Function:
Assist the Director with the management of the WPI Police Department. Assist with the development, implementation and management of all safety and security programs at the Institution.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as Chief of Police in absence of Chief.
  • Assist Chief in departmental fiscal matters.
  • Assist Chief with developing strategic plans for operations and university wide public safety planning.
  • Serve in advisory capacity to Chief of Police/Director.
  • Advises and assists subordinates in the proper course of action in solving highly complex organizational problems.
  • Supports the Planning for major/special events.
  • Manages the campus police oversight of the Universitys card access system basis.
  • Oversees, manages and serves as the IMC systems administrator including the tallying of monthly Felony reports.
  • Facilitate and participate in Emergency Preparedness planning, training exercises and events. Understands and facilitates the ICS when appropriate.
  • Oversees and administers the day to day managerial review and external dissemination of police logs and IMC incidents.
  • Manages the departments receord management IMC system as Keeper of the Records.
  • Serves as Payroll time sheet supervisor including the review and approval of personnel biweekly payroll submissions.
  • Enforces all departmental regulations, policies and procedures specific to WPI police.
  • Assists the Chief with the oversight and direction of lower rank command officers and police personnel, including conducting personnel related investigations.
  • Supports the Chief with harmonious and collaborative efforts between local police, fire, state and federal agencies. Helps in fostering a cooperative and coordinated effect in matters of campus safety and security.
  • Assists Chief of Police in the hiring and screening of Police employees.
  • Performs such other duties as he/she may be assigned by superior officer.

    Position Requirements

  • Must have 7 years of management level experience in police/public safety and 3 years in a police supervisory role. A Masters degree from an accredited college or university and campus police management experience is preferred, however the candidate must have earned a Bachelors degree.
  • Certifications in Incident Command System (ICS) training and experience in emergency preparedness management, planning and execution.
  • Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems.
  • Must possess excellent training, supervisory administrative and managerial skills.
  • Must possess exceptional interpersonal communication and public speaking skills.
  • Must be able to obtain and retain authority as a Special State Police Officer in accordance with MGL c22Cs63.
  • Graduate from Massachusetts Municipal Training Council (MPTC) Recruit or Reserve Academy or the Massachusetts State Police Academy or its equivalent.
  • Must interact and collaborate with different constituencies of internal and external WPI community including local, state and federal public safety agencies.
  • Must possess exceptional knowledge of federal, state and local laws, University policies and procedures and traffic regulations.
  • Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms (LTC).
