About the Opportunity:
Northeastern University seeks an innovative, strategic, energetic, and passionate thought partner to be the next University Registrar. Reporting to the Senior Vice Provost for Budget, Planning, and Administration, the University Registrar will work in partnership with constituents across multiple campuses and be an advisor and influential leader in a dynamic service environment. The University Registrar is responsible for providing strategic direction, operational oversight, leadership, and management for the Registrar's team. The University Registrar will lead, participate in, and contribute to key, university-wide, strategic planning efforts and activities. The University Registrar plays a pivotal role in ensuring the integrity of student records - past, present, and future - and interpreting and upholding the academic policies that support student success and academic vitality at Northeastern University.

Responsibilities:

The Office of the Registrar
The Office of the Registrar is part of the Provost's organization, reporting to Breean Fortier, the Senior Vice Provost for Budget, Planning and Administration. The Office of the Registrar (OR) is dedicated to supporting the mission and values of Northeastern by engaging faculty, students and alumni across the globe. The OR contributes to this mission by providing efficient and proactive operational support as well as strategic advice across all nine schools and colleges, all the campuses in the network, and throughout current and future models of program delivery. The OR facilitates a culture that values the ambitions of Northeastern University, and provides connections to the university's academic records, programs, and policies, as well as local state, federal, and international law.

The Opportunity
The University Registrar will provide critical leadership, advice, and support at the intersection of technology, business process, and policy to university leaders and campuses across the global network. The University Registrar will have responsibility for setting the strategic and operational vision and goals for the OR, while also planning, prioritizing, advising, and managing the OR's people and resources in alignment with the goals and mission of the university. The University Registrar will be a big-picture thinker and thought partner. They will collaborate and advise; influence policy, processes and best practices; and participate in the development and execution of global campus and mobility programs, continuing education offerings, certificates, non-credit bearing education, and other innovative education delivery programs.

The University Registrar will have 4 direct reports and a team of 40 under their management. This talented team shares responsibility for many services including academic records, registration services, classroom management and scheduling, enrollment verifications, transcript/degree audit and transfer affairs, system optimization and data analysis, reporting, project management, advising on related issues, and compliance with federal, state, international, and other regulatory agencies. The Registrar will work in close partnership with the Global Office, the General Counsel's Office, Academic Operations, faculty and campus academic leaders, Student Affairs, University Decision Support, and Information Technology Services, among many others.

The University Registrar will have responsibility for:

  • Leading the office in its support for overall student success; overseeing the direction and operational excellence of the OR and overseeing connections between the office and the many global network constituents;

  • Overseeing the management, maintenance, and safeguarding of academic records for all students enrolled at the University; ensuring the accuracy, confidentiality, security, and integrity of records and of the Northeastern degree and certificate;

  • Assessing and managing current and future technologies to ensure maximization of operations both within and outside the OR; including effective and optimal use of the current student information system, Banner 9, and related integrated systems;

  • Guiding and implementing new policies and procedures recommended through partnership with campus constituents;

  • Serving as an active participant on a variety of academic committees and task forces; participating in discussions regarding current and future trends in opportunities and challenges related to enrollment, new programs, certificates, degrees, academic and records policies and procedures, and other related topics as they develop;

  • Proactively identifying opportunities and risks to the university and its students as it pursues the ambitions supporting Northeastern 2025;

  • Conducting regular outreach to constituents regarding the successes and roles of the OR; soliciting and incorporating feedback from the same group in a continuous self-improvement cycle for the office;

  • Providing professional development and mentorship opportunities to staff within the OR; creating an internal learning program for the OR; managing and setting clear goals, objectives, and measures for the team; creating and encouraging an environment that values diversity of thought and experience, equity in involvement and contribution, and inclusive of each team member; and

  • Communicating and presenting to academic administration, faculty, and external campus partners.

    Qualifications:

    Candidate Profile
    The ideal candidate will have many or all of the following attributes and demonstrated abilities:

  • Exceptional team leadership, development, and management ability;

  • An ability to influence, engage, and ignite groups; inform and lead discussions on university policy and process; strong active listening with a presence that conveys confidence, respect, and credibility;

  • Strong analytical skills, data management, and creative problem-solving ability;

  • Demonstrated proactive and consultative customer service and student service orientation;

  • Thorough understanding of academic and operational best practices, policies, and procedures in a fast-paced, complex and dynamic setting;

  • Record of leadership in the use of technology solutions preferably with online catalog management, degree audit systems, classroom scheduling and optimization systems and integrated student information databases; use of query tools and experience with Banner preferred;

  • Familiarity with state and federal laws, including Compliance/Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); experience working in partnership with a general counsel's office; experience with and knowledge of governmental and accrediting agencies;

  • Minimum of 10 years' progressively responsible experience in a medium to large research university setting, experience in academic operations, and a demonstrated understanding of high-level customer service delivery and administrative partnership support for other administrative and academic offices, in a changing and complex global environment; and

  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree or Juris Doctor degree preferred.
