The ideal candidate will share Madera Community College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. We currently enroll over 7,000 students in which 68% identify as Latinx, 1% as Filipino, 8% as Asian, 3% as Black/African American, 18% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 3% as multiracial. Madera Community College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.

The instructor may be required to complete the Distance Education Certification in order to teach courses virtually. If required, the certification can be obtained through the college and must be completed within the first semester.

Under the direction of the Dean of Instruction for STEM and CTE, providing instruction in Biology on the Madera Community College campus and/or at off-site community campus locations, the instructor will be responsible for:

  • Teaching both lecture and laboratory classes in biology for majors, microbiology, human anatomy and human physiology;
  • Maintaining instruments used in teaching biology;
  • Teaching the principles and applications of biology instrumentation;
  • Assisting in the coordination of laboratory facilities and assuring the availability of supplies and equipment;
  • Evaluating adjunct instructors, and collecting data on student learning outcomes;
  • Curriculum and program development and/or revision, including program review and the development and assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs to improve student learning;
  • Participating in the accreditation process;
  • Communicating effectively with students and staff and maintaining effective working relationships;
  • Developing classroom presentations using multimedia tools;
  • Advising students;
  • Participating in appropriate professional meetings and workshops;
  • Cooperating with regard to scheduling classes between colleagues in the same disciplines;
  • Participating in the student recruiting activities;
  • Serving on and participating in department, division, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Working on assignments in a variety of settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed; and
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of faculty as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.


Minimum Qualifications:
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; AND
  • Masters in any biological science;

    OR
  • Bachelors in any biological science AND Masters in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science;

    OR
  • A valid California Community College Credential;

    OR
  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency)

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Experience working with a diverse student population;
  • Experience teaching at the post-secondary level;
  • Broad-based academic background in biology;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Knowledge of current laboratory safety procedures;
  • Experience in maintaining instruments used in teaching biology;
  • Experience serving on committees;
  • Knowledge and use of current educational technology and multimedia presentation software;
  • Knowledge and experience in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes;
  • Commitment to professional growth including demonstrated willingness to improving teaching methodology;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.


Conditions of Employment:
177 duty days.

Salary and Benefits:
Starting salary is $60,678 $91,350 based on education and experience. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,270 is available. Salary and stipends are prorated based on the number of duty days assigned. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, August 4th.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the ecommended candidates. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews, which are tentatively scheduled for Friday, August 6th.

A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
