Job Summary
The University of Michigan (U-M) Medical School seeks a nationally recognized, accomplished and visionary leader for the U-M Depression Center. The mission of the center is to detect depression, bipolar illnesses, and related disorders earlier, treat more effectively, prevent recurrences and progression, counteract stigma, and improve public policy by forging and helping lead a national and international consortium of depression/bipolar centers analogous to the NIH-supported National Network of Cancer Centers. The Director will build on the significant center and institutional strengths, commitment to clinical excellence, research innovation, superb education, community outreach, and national and international leadership emphasizing a culture of patient and family centered care and precision health.

The Director of the Depression Center reports to the EVPMA/Dean of the Medical School, with delegation to the Executive Vice Dean for Academic Affairs (EVDAA), in consultation with the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry. The Director's faculty appointment will be in the Department of Psychiatry, with a maximum administrative appointment of 60% effort, (remaining effort spent in a faculty appointment).

Responsibilities*
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Leadership and Strategic Planning
    • Lead in creating and implementing a unifying vision for the future of the Depression Center with other leaders and key stakeholders across the University.
    • Lead the Center staff and participate in other institutional oversight units, as needed.
    • Recruit, retain and oversee professional development efforts in coordination with the Department of Psychiatry and/or other University units.
    • Collaborate with external entities, such as the National Advisory Board, on strategic and funding related issues.
  • Community Engagement
    • Translate, disseminate and implement approaches to research advances.
    • Serve as the center's primary external liaison.
  • Financial Sustainability
    • Grow the financial resources of the center through extramural funding and philanthropy.
  • Regulatory Compliance
    • Assure adherence to relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
    • Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion with an overt appreciation for their important contributions to excellence.

Required Qualifications*
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS
The successful candidate will have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree, be a psychiatrist with subspecialty training and Certification, with national/international expertise, relevant to the center's mission. The candidate must have an outstanding record of scholarly accomplishment. This individual must be highly collaborative and motivated and have significant experience building, unifying and guiding interdisciplinary teams. A candidate must have a proven track record in developing research programs; dedication to the clinical mission; a demonstrated commitment to education; and significant philanthropic, administrative and budgetary experience.

Additional desired qualifications are for the candidate to have a track record in policy and advocacy, as well as obtaining external funding on a national level.
