Job Description

WHO WE'RE SEEKING: Grossmont College seeks academic professionals who are dedicated to equitable student success outcomes for all students. We are seeking a colleague who will bring a culturally affirming, student-centered approach, empathy, compassion, and understanding of the holistic needs of our diverse community.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under an assigned supervisor, regular/contract counselors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions and values of the college and District. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments, large lectures and small seminars, and is being offered by a college strongly committed to the "open door" concept serving a diverse student population. The EOPS (Extended Opportunities Programs and Services) Counselor will serve students in the CARE Single Parent and NextUp Foster Youth Services programs, and is expected to perform other duties consistent with their faculty job description as stated in the faculty contract.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: APPLICANTS MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
A) Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development, or the equivalent,

AND

B) Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages,

OR

Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages,

AND

C) two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages,

OR
The equivalent. If you are applying based on "the equivalent", you will need to complete an Equivalency Determination Form. This form MUST be submitted as part of the application procedures.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education and experience providing counseling services to students who are educationally and economically disadvantaged.
  • Experience in college-level academic, personal, and career counseling, preferably at a community college.
  • Training and experience working with individuals and groups in providing personal and crisis counseling.
  • Knowledge and experience working with multicultural, ethnicity, socio-economic, high-trauma backgrounds, and/or linguistically diverse students.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to keeping current on issues involving counseling in education.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience conducting counseling-related workshops and orientations, and teaching counseling-related courses.
  • Experience that demonstrates active participation in the campus and broader community including serving on departmental and college committees, and taking a leadership role in campus, community and professional organizations and committees.
  • Experience with trauma-informed counseling.
  • Experience collaborating with other campus departments including CalWORKs, Accessibility Resource Center, Financial Aid, Justice Scholars, and academic/instructional departments.
  • Experience counseling students about community college options including certificate, associate degree, and/or transferring to four-year institutions.
  • Experience in outreach to high schools, middle schools and community agencies.
  • Collaboration with community organizations.
