Job Description:

The School of Human Protective Services at Madison College is hiring a full time Fire/NextGen Responders Academy Instructor. Madison College is a comprehensive, open-access institution providing a high-quality education to a diverse population, including first-generation college students. We are seeking motivated and engaged candidates who share a willingness to collaborate with other faculty members, staff, students, and the community at large. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the field and to teaching that will enable them to be a visionary and innovative member of the program.

This position has lead faculty responsibilities in the NextGen Responders Academy for high school juniors and seniors and will provide additional instruction in the Fire Protection Technician associate degree program and/or Fire Service non-degree training. This includes developing a relevant and progressive curriculum, designing, and implementing effective learning strategies and environments, delivering instruction of high quality, assessing student learning, advising students, and participating in college service activities at the department, school, and college levels.

Additional NextGen responsibilities may include leading recruitment and retention efforts regarding underrepresented demographics in the protective services, partnering with Early College and participating high schools, and contributing to student success and retention by advising students with course selection, career concerns, internships, and other matters. This position reports to the Dean of the School of Human Protective Services.

Our goal is to conduct first round virtual interviews starting the week of March 25, and second round in-person interviews the week of April 8. Final virtual interviews to be the following week.

Expected Start date: August 12, 2024

A faculty member in this position can expect to teach 50% in the NextGen Responders Academy program, and 50% in the Fire Protection Technician associate degree program and/or Fire Service non-degree training. Teaching will occur in person (day and evening), and online. All faculty are expected to teach in a variety of formats (training provided as needed for non-traditional formats).

Essential Duties:
  • Facilitate student learning by developing appropriate instructional strategies to fit students' needs and support student engagement. Continually revise curriculum to improve student learning.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide regular feedback in courses taught by the instructor.
  • Contribute to student success and retention by advising students with course selection, career concerns, internships, and other matters.
  • Serve as an advocate for students and engage in activities that help students achieve their goals such as writing letters of recommendation, and/or helping students link with internships, service learning, job shadowing and other forms of networking.
  • Provide support to the program, the school, and the college by attending and engaging in events and meetings and participating fully within the team environment.
  • Continually improve teaching through professional development activities and the integration of new techniques and technology. This includes the development and implementation of an individualized professional development plan.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Effective communication skills including demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. This includes, but is not limited to, knowledge/experience with current educational methods/strategies such as learner-centered instruction, active learning, assessment, evaluation, collaborative techniques, and strategies aimed at closing the achievement gaps across race, gender, class, and disability.
  • Desire and ability to teach courses at both the collegiate transfer and technical/occupational program levels.
  • Ability to communicate complex and difficult concepts and ideas to students with varied backgrounds and levels of preparedness.
  • Engage in continuous improvement in the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods, as well as incorporating appropriate use of new and emerging technologies into the learning environment.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues on course and program promotion, direction, and innovation.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in any field
  • Certified Wisconsin Emergency Services Instructor (ESI) with the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) within 60 days of hire AND prior to beginning instruction (Must maintain ESI Certification with the WTCS)
  • Two (2) years of 4,000 hours of related work experience with at least 1 year of occupational work experience (2,000 hours) that is within 5 years prior to the date of appointment (this can be waived if the instructor has at least 2 years of post-secondary teaching experience in the field within the previous 5 years)
