Description:

The Facilities Services Department at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) seeks a highly motivated individual for the Grounds & Nursery II position. The primary purpose of this position is to provide landscape maintenance for the UCCS West Campus. This area is critical in creating an aesthetically pleasing, positive first impression and safe environment. This position supports the mission of UCCS. Maintenance of these areas is year round, requiring seasonal specific work tasks. This position requires knowledge in all facets of landscape maintenance but especially in irrigation management. Student employees will report to this this position, assisting with the stewardship of this UCCS property. The position requires driving related vehicles in all types of weather conditions.

The key responsibilities include:

Turf & Vegetation Maintenace
  • As directed, participates in the seasonal landscape maintenance plan for the UCCS Main Campus Property.
  • Work includes turf maintenance, seasonal planting, plant care, pruning, and fertilizing.
  • Inspects flowers, grass, trees and shrubs for disease and deficiencies and directs the application of fertilizers and insecticides to improve condition. Requires the use of power equipment to maintain areas.
  • Guides, directs and participates in irrigation system repair and system management to obtain landscape objectives.
  • Guides and directs assigned student labor on daily property landscape maintenance tasks.
  • Performs work in a safe and professional manor.
  • Effectively works with the internal team, the supervisor and campus customer to plan and schedule work requests.
  • Provides options and solutions to resolve "Outdoor Services" issues.
  • Communicates with customer's using the work order system, phone, email and face to face methods.
  • Makes recommendations to Supervisor for equipment and supplies from approved vendors to complete department objectives.
  • Maintains related inventory to acceptable levels so that the daily service requirements are not interrupted.
  • Works within purchasing authority and follows policies.
  • Drives department vehicles to support maintenance and landscape processes.

Litter Control, Trash Collection, Sign Maintenance
  • Polices trash, cleans and sweeps assigned areas.
  • Collects and transports recyclable materials to waste collection areas.
  • Maintains assigned pedestrian walkways and roadways, keeping them free from dirt and debris.
  • Provides year-round maintenance of pedestrian walkways, roadways, parking lots, signs, exterior common areas and trails.

Small Equipment/Vehicle Maintenance
  • Participates in the maintenance of equipment which includes campus owned vehicles, gators, mowers, tractors, trailers, sanders, snowplows, edger's, skid loader, backpack blowers, chainsaws, trimmers, spreaders and other related equipment.
  • Operations may include, trenching, moving material, snow removal and horizontal earthwork.

Snow and Ice Control
  • Participates in the removal of snow and ice from campus.
  • Provides sand for roadways and ice melt for walkways.
  • Cleaning of sidewalks and roads after snow event.
  • Operates heavy equipment (skid loader and dump truck) for snow removal and in support of campus operations.

Candidates must understand and comply with the following:

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 2 years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position such as grounds and nursery, landscaping, storm-water maintenance, outdoor services, or other related fields.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be a Colorado resident.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3-4 years or more of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned.
  • 1 or more years experience in an Essential Personnel Role.
  • 2-3 years of experience in a commercial setting such as a university or hospital.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk. This position involves climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling and fine motor skills. Tasks may involve looking at computer screen continuously for long periods of time. Talking and hearing within normal range. Clarity of vision for 20 feet or more, depth perception and accommodation. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and frequently required to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. This position may be asked to remove snow and ice when seasonal conditions require it. Working conditions: this position will have exposure to extreme cold, heat, and atmospheric conditions. May have exposure to electrical shock, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.
