Lab Operations and Safety Manager

About the Opportunity

JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Bioengineering is seeking a driven, dynamic professional for the Lab Operations and Safety Manager. This person will serve as the department safety officer which entails: (a) serve as the principal liaison with the ISEC Director of Operations; COE Assistant Director of Academic Operations; COE Assistant Director of Lab Operations; and the Department of Environmental Health and Safety to ensure that all lab personnel are properly trained before laboratory access is granted and that their training is kept current. (b) Send reminders to faculty, students, and other researchers when refresher training is required to ensure that BioE labs are compliant with university and regulatory safety policy at all times. (c) Arrange for access (card authorization, keys, combinations, etc.) to the appropriate labs. (d) Maintain records of who has access to each lab and remove access to lab personnel who have graduated or left university or whose safety training has lapsed. (e) Ensure that assigned BioE labs are compliant with university safety policy at all times. Coordinate annual testing and certifications of biosafety cabinets (BSC). Continue to review proposed projects with faculty and advise students on the safety of project specifications. Advise teams on IRB (Institutional Review Board), IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) and IBC (Institutional Biosafety Committee) requirements. This person will be responsible for space planning and strategic designing, facilitating and overseeing development, renovation, and operations for the Bioengineering research labs (currently 30 labs spaces and continuously growing). Work closely with all college and facilities personnel, BioE department chair, business manager, and ISEC Director of Operations on lab space in ISEC (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th floors and basement) and 1 other building across Northeastern campus. Advise faculty and staff on all purchasing related to BioE research and teaching labs. Given specifications, research vendors, obtain multiple quotes when required, and negotiate discounts with vendors. Coordinate visits by vendors if appropriate. Manage the process related to lab facilities requests, such as transportation, and logistics with large and biohazard materials. Coordinate facilities, transportation, and logistics when equipment is moved from one lab to another, or when major equipment is installed or removed. This person will manage the lab coordinator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Masters degree preferred but not required in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, or related field. At least 2 years of experience working in academic laboratory operations in a shared laboratory setting are required. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required together with strong computer skills including Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook), Adobe Acrobat DC or Pro. Strong proficiency with Excel required. Ability and willingness to learn new systems independently required. Ability to work well independently as well as within a team environment. Strong organizational skills and a problem-solving mindset are required. The candidate will naturally be proactive with the ability to take initiative and ownership of responsibilities. Ability to work and service labs, PI's, and students across multiple buildings at the Boston campus.
