Job Title: MRI Technologist III

Job Summary:

The MRI technologist for the BIC should be capable of performing at an advanced level to support research studies at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The MRI technologist should demonstrate advanced technical knowledge, be capable of making complex research/technical judgments, and be competent in following research protocols. The technologist would also be expected to stay abreast of new technological advancements and protocol updates relating to the position. In this position, the individual must demonstrate the ability to provide quality care for human research participants and perform all job duties with sensitivity and attention to age and/or clinical status of the participant population, including effective communication of imaging procedures.

This position involves performing MRI procedures across a wide range of development (including infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations) and clinical considerations (e.g., overweight/obesity, mental health, neurological status). Duties also include keeping accurate and timely records of study/scanner activities, equipment maintenance, and quality control assessments. Additional duties may include general and administrative support functions necessary for routine operations. This position requires adherence to the University of Colorado Code of Conduct, IRB policies, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform imaging procedures according to BIC-specific and study-specific protocols.
  • Educate research participants regarding scanning procedures to ensure understanding, cooperation, and comfort.
  • Guide research assistants in procedures relevant to scanning (e.g., how to prepare the participant, computer set-up, when to begin fMRI task paradigms) and help them with troubleshooting.
  • Identify and troubleshoot problematic situations that may arise during MRI scanning.
  • Monitor participants during scanning and respond as needed.
  • Regularly perform and document quality control procedures on equipment. This includes taking appropriate and timely action to resolve image quality issues.
  • Perform processing and transferring of acquired imaging data as needed. This includes maintaining a working knowledge of imaging processing and software/hardware components.
  • Maintain professional interactions with investigators, research participants, and staff.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree from an accredited institution in radiologic technology or field of study related to the work assignment.
    • Additional appropriate experience will substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Two (2) years of MRI experience with human populations and brain-specific imaging.
  • Registered as a Technologist (RT) and registered in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in radiologic technology or field of study related to the work assignment.
  • Three (3) or more years of MRI experience with human populations and brain-specific imaging.
  • Experience in a senior/supervisory role.
  • Previous experience working with a Siemens MRI scanner.
  • Experience with E-Prime and/or Presentation software.
  • Experience with cardiac imaging and MR spectroscopy.
  • Experience with MRI quality control procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Detailed understanding of MR physics and MR image quality (including appropriate MR certification.
  • MR-relevant computer proficiency (including ability to navigate between multiple screens and systems quickly and accurately)
  • Experience with human MRI, including brain imaging.
  • Ability to understand and adjust scan parameters based on desired outcomes.
  • Highly developed knowledge of general objectives in MR methodologies and applications, related equipment, and human anatomy/physiology.
  • Ability to independently identify and troubleshoot technical problems that may arise during scanning or quality control checks. Familiarity and experience with relevant hardware/software.
  • High level of organization, necessary for adhering to varied protocols for multiple studies per day.
  • Strong time-management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to assess participant safety for imaging and administer emergency medical care if necessary.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Competency in ethical research conduct and familiar with regulatory compliance procedures (e.g., IRB).
  • Comfortable working with research participants spanning a broad range of development (i.e., from infant to geriatric populations).
  • Ability to work with research participants from various clinical populations, including those with mental illness (e.g., schizophrenia) and/or those with overweight/obesity.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $78,194 - $93,000.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
