Network Administrator

Position Summary
The Network Administrator provides technical assistance, support, and provides advice to users, as well as, day-to-day administration, maintenance, and support of the UIW residence hall networks and the larger UIW network across multiple locations on the UIW campus. This includes supporting Cisco ISE, Meraki and Cisco hardware, and other tools. The Network Administrator will troubleshoot, interpret problems and provide technical support for network hardware and associated systems such as switches, routers, wireless access points, and controllers. The Network Administrator will answer tickets/phone calls; analyze problems using automated diagnostic programs, and resolve recurrent difficulties. The Network Administrator will install, modify, clean, and repair network hardware and software. The Network Administrator participates in capacity planning, supports the creation and the maintenance of network disaster recovery plans, and proactively monitors local/wireless network performance. The Network Administrator will communicate technical information to non-technical network users, students, and other personnel. This position also will support management of the Cisco Firepower Firewall solution.

Description of Job Duties
Provides administration and other assigned tasks on the following network systems: Cisco Identity Services Engine, Cisco Secure Access Control Server, Meraki Wireless Management Console, Solarwinds, Cisco Firepower Management Console, and Bluecat Proteus IPAM / Adonis DNS;
Engineers, installs, monitors and maintains the residence hall network equipment including Cisco switches, Meraki Access points and supporting software in order to optimize the effectiveness and to provide quality service;
Responds to real-time performance alerts to resolve performance problems; performs regular on-going review and analysis of performance data to identify current performance problems and proactively detects potential future performance problems;
Provides technical support for network issues or requests that pertain to network components;
Maintains current knowledge of industry trends and technologies;
Independently performs complex troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, solution development and implementation;
Proactively create broad and detailed usage reports for leadership, planning events, and other activities as required;
Provide training across organizational departments to support services, junior staff, and end users including students;
Gather user requirements and identify, predict, interpret, and evaluate system requirements;
Analyze equipment performance records to determine the need for
repair, upgrades, or replacement;
Maintain logs, maintenance and repair records, and system documentation;
Research new technology and implement it or recommend its implementation;
Coordinate with vendors and University personnel in order to facilitate purchases;
Create, log, update, and close trouble tickets within the universities ticketing system;
Maintain confidentiality with regard to the information being processed, stored or accessed on the universities systems;
Perform other related duties and assignments as required.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
-Well versed in core networking concepts, network monitoring and troubleshooting;
-Knowledge of information security rules and regulation related to data confidentiality (e.g. FERPA, HIPPA, and PCI);
-Skills in designing, implementing, and maintaining a Meraki wireless local area network including access point installation/configuration and use of the Meraki management software;
-Skills in using network monitoring tools such as Solarwinds, Cisco Prime, and others to proactively monitor a variety of network conditions;
-Proficient in IP addressing / subnetting, protocol analysis tools, sniffers;
-Ability to work both independently and successfully in teams;
-Advanced critical thinking and problem solving skills;
-Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job;
-Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions;
-Ability to manage multiple priorities;
-Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations;
-Ability to communicate in non-technical terms to non-technical people;

Required Education
Associates degree; relevant network administration experience may substitute for formal education.

Required Work Experience
-Minimum of 3 years of experience with Multiprotocol Wireless Networks in a managed environment including wireless lan controllers;
-Minimum of 3 years of experience with Multiprotocol Local Area Networks;
-Minimum of 3 years of experience with Network Security appliances or Network Access Control software, especially Cisco ISE;
-Experience with installing, configuring, and managing Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE);
-Experience with Cisco switches, including ability to use Cisco IOS to configure switches;
-Experience with network security tools, procedures, and best practices

Preferred Qualifications
-Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or in a related field;
-Experience in System Administration, specifically for higher education;
-Proven knowledge and success as a System Administrator, including working on project teams

Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
Network+ Certification, CCNA, or similar

Work Hours
Typical work week is 8AM to 5PM but flexible. Evening hours or weekend work, at times, should be expected.

Physical Demands
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. Work may be performed in buildings across campus. May be required to lift equipment boxes up to 50 lbs.
