About the Opportunity:
Are you passionate about science education, conservation, and experiential learning? Join the Outreach Team at the Marine Science Center this Spring and Summer to lead K-12 programs integrating hands-on STEM activities and exploration of the unique rocky intertidal ecosystems on our campus in Nahant, Massachusetts!

Since 1967, Northeastern University's Marine Science Center (MSC) has generated outstanding teaching and research in the marine and environmental sciences. The Outreach Program reaches approximately 8,000 people per year, incorporating the research of the center with field-based programs that foster appreciation for the natural world and scientific discovery. This position reports to the Outreach Instructor and is responsible for assisting with coordination and delivery of marine science programs, ranging from tidepool and touch tank exploration with elementary students to marine ecology summer programs for high schoolers.

This is a seasonal, hourly position. The ideal candidate will be available from May through mid-November. Hours vary weekly; a ypical week will be approximately 15-20 hours, with a few weeks (in late July and August) requiring 40 hours, as well as occasional evening and weekend hours.

Responsibilities:
Assist Outreach Instructor with day-to-day operation of outreach programs and special events

Assist with planning and delivery of field and classroom lessons to PreK-12 students

Maintain, organize and prepare outreach program materials, equipment, and aquaria

Qualifications:
Bachelors degree required in marine biology, environmental science, or related field

Two+ years of experience working with youth

Excellent organizational and communication skills

Professional and mature, with a strong customer service ethic

Ability to comfortably lead groups on foot over uneven and slippery rocky shore

Ability to lift and move 30-40 lb. buckets of seawater

Willingness and eligibility to drive University vehicles (US license, 21+ years old, clean driving record)

Basic knowledge of New England coastal habitats strongly preferred
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and/or weekends

    First Aid and CPR certification preferred, or willingness to become certified

    Salary Grade:
    Seasonal, hourly position; wage $15 per hour.
