POSITION SUMMARY
Under general direction of the Chief of Police, plans, organizes and directs the activities and daily operations of an assigned unit, function or patrol shift within the Police and Security Department. Supervises and performs specialized duties requiring investigation of alleged or actual crime and violations of laws, rules and regulations. Prepares detailed reports and reviews other reports to ensure accuracy.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves as shift supervisor of an assigned shift and provides direct supervision of daily activities and operations of subordinate personnel by ensuring instructions, policies, procedures and practices of the department are followed. In conjunction with the Chief of Police, coordinates staff efforts in crime prevention, patrol operations, criminal investigations, charging, radio communications and parking functions for all of the College's campuses and two TCATs. In cooperation with the Chief of Campus Police, prepares work schedules for a continuous weekly operation, assigns overtime and approves requests for leave.

Assists the Chief of Campus Police in reviewing work of designated employees, assists and instructs designated officers in investigations and other unusual situations and assists with training of police and security officers. Patrols assigned areas on foot, bicycle or car to detect crime and arrest violators. Notifies the Chief of Police of crimes, arrests and other unusual events and coordinates with other law enforcement agencies, if appropriate. Regulates pedestrian and vehicular traffic, investigates traffic accidents and files preliminary accident reports. Apprehends, arrests, and files charges on suspects when appropriate. Prepares and presents testimony in court concerning traffic violations, burglaries and other offenses. Serves as special courier for various College units and provides security for special college events.

Evaluates operational needs and assigns personnel and equipment resources in a manner which provides the most effective and efficient use of both. Communicates directives, orders and objectives to personnel under his/her supervision. Attends training and ensures officers meet training requirements. Conducts annual performance evaluations of personnel under his/her supervisor. Monitors and documents performance and, in consultation with the Office of Human Resources, takes appropriate disciplinary action when needed. Identifies and analyzes problems in the unit and recommends solutions. Reviews paperwork submitted by subordinates for accuracy.

Maintains mental alertness and assumes command in critical incidents or emergency situations. Responds to inquiries, requests and major incidents reported to Campus Police. In conjunction with the Chief of Police, creates crisis and disaster plans, conducts routine safety drills, and coordinates activities on campus consistent with the College's Emergency Response Plan. Together with the Chief of Police, manages administrative functions of the department including department budget, equipment and vehicles and approves purchase requisitions, and monthly account statements. Assists Chief of Police with maintaining and documenting compliance with POST regulations, annual law enforcement certifications and other training/workshops appropriate for police/security personnel. Provides 24 hour administrative on-call of all serious incidents and activities that occur within the College. Remains visible on campus and be readily available to members of the campus community.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent

Five years (5) relevant law enforcement experience

Two (2) or more years of supervisory experience

Possess a valid Tennessee driver's license. Out of state applicants must obtain a Tennessee driver's license within thirty (30) days of hire

Current certification by the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Commission, per TCA 38-8-107, or the ability to become P.O.S.T. certified within six (6) months of hire

Must pass a medical examination, drug screen and a psychological evaluation

Must pass a thorough background investigation, including a favorable criminal background report and motor vehicle record. Must never have been convicted of or pled guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state law or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft or controlled substances.

Must have received an honorable discharge if a former member of the U.S. armed forces

Have his/her fingerprints on file with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associate's Degree

Experience working in a campus safety and security environment, as well as knowledge of circumstances that are unique to a college setting

Experience in emergency management and safety preparedness in a higher education environment

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Clear, accurate and concise communication skills, both verbally and in writing, with high attention to detail. Knowledge of Title IX requirements, the Clery Act, and other federal and state campus safety rules and regulations. Ability to learn and follow Nashville State and Tennessee Board of Regent policy and procedures. Experience with law enforcement training/teaching techniques.

Ability to learn department-specific software and databases, as well as the ability to enter and retrieve information accurately. Ability to use a multi-channel radio system. Ability to train, mentor, and supervise others. Ability to maintain composure during stressful situations. Ability to pass and maintain physical fitness standards. Ability to pass firearm qualifications. Ability to complete a Field Training Officer program.

Ability and willingness to work any shift assigned. Shift assignments may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and various hours and occur at a campus location that best meets the needs of the department. Ability to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, the campus is closed and/or the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Rate of Pay: $56,950 to $68,349 annually, depending on experience

Work Hours: 40 hours per week. May include days, evenings, nights, weekends and/or holidays.
