Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. Founded in 1962, the college serves more than 16,000 students with room to expand on its 267 acre main campus and 120 acre Los Banos site. Merced, incorporated in 1889, offers historical sites, affordable housing, access to the Bay Area and Sacramento, and is the Gateway to Yosemite National Park and the Sierra mountains as well as home to the University of California Merced campus. We are actively seeking a dedicated full-time, Agriculture Production/Ag Systems instructor, tasked with nurturing students of diverse abilities while exhibiting expertise in the field. The ideal candidate will embrace an innovative teaching ethos to bolster student success. Central to this role is the championing of culturally-responsive pedagogical and andragogical techniques, ensuring effective engagement with learners from varied backgrounds, learning needs, and academic aspirations. Teaching duties will encompass a diverse array of formats and schedules, spanning daytime, evening, and weekend classes, with obligatory office hours to facilitate student support and academic guidance. General Description:
This position is a full-time, non-tenured instructional assignment in the Agriculture and Industrial Technology Department under the general direction of the Dean of Agriculture.
Essential responsibilities include the continual enhancement of curriculum to enhance accessibility and pertinence, incorporating cutting-edge technology for optimal classroom delivery, and leveraging innovative methodologies like Competency-Based Education (CBE). These initiatives are designed to furnish students with the requisite knowledge and skills for attainment of their educational and career objectives.

Specifically, within the Ag Systems Certificate CBE program, content spans crucial domains such as Agriculture Technical Literacy, Agricultural Systems, Agricultural Safety, Equipment Operation, Configuration & Troubleshooting, and Workplace Effectiveness.

Key responsibilities extend to active involvement in instructional and departmental activities, including student recruitment, advising, and curriculum refinement to align with industry benchmarks and accreditation mandates. Collaboration with fellow faculty members is imperative to ensure program coherence and compliance. A pivotal aspect of this role entails proactive engagement in college governance, alongside regular participation in campus meetings, including potential Academic Senate appointments.

Examples of Duties


Essential Functions:
  • Provide innovative and effective instruction in accordance with current pedagogy and established course outlines and expectations
  • Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policies and maintain regular and substantive contact with students
  • Maintain and submit required student attendance and scholastic records on the Learning Management System (e.g. grades and syllabi)
  • Utilize the Learning Management System to deliver, prepare, and grade class assignments and examinations
  • Maintain and utilize effective skills in instructional design, applications, and methods
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum
  • Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials
  • Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees
  • Represent the college within the Merced community and within professional circles
  • Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments to continually improve student learning outcomes


Typical Qualifications


Required:
  • Master's in agriculture, agriculture science, education with a specialization in agriculture or other agricultural area (including: agricultural business, agricultural engineering, agricultural mechanics, agronomy, animal science, enology, environmental (ornamental) horticulture, equine science, forestry, natural resources, plant science, pomology, soil science, viticulture or other agriculture science)
OR
  • The equivalent
  • Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.

Preferred:
  • Teaching experience in the subject matter
  • Current technology skills related to teaching in the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments
