Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. Merced College is currently accepting applications for a full-time instructor position, specifically for the role of Truck Driving Professor. This position is funded through categorical resources. The ideal candidate will deliver comprehensive instruction aimed at assisting students in obtaining their Commercial Driving Permit and License. Emphasis will be placed on imparting both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for safe and proficient driving in the commercial trucking industry. General Description:

This position is a full-time, non-tenured instructional assignment in the Agriculture and Industrial Technology Department under the general direction of the Dean of Agriculture. This teaching assignment may require teaching lecture-discussion courses during the day, evening, or on the weekend. Courses include Class A California Driver License, Permit Training, Class A California Driver License Behind-The-Wheel Training, and Class A California Driver License Internship. Instruction for the Permit Training course takes place in a traditional classroom setting, while Behind-The-Wheel Training takes place in an outdoor lab setting and on public roads.

Examples of Duties


Essential Functions:
  • Provide innovative and effective instruction in accordance with current pedagogy and established course outlines and expectations
  • Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance policies and maintain regular and substantive contact with students
  • Maintain and submit required student attendance and scholastic records on the Learning Management System (e.g. grades and syllabi)
  • Utilize the Learning Management System to deliver, prepare, and grade class assignments and examinations
  • Maintain and utilize effective skills in instructional design, applications, and methods
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum
  • Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials
  • Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees
  • Represent the college within the Merced community and within professional circles
  • Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments
  • Assist in growing the program through community outreach to employers and through outreach events


Typical Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution AND two (2) years of occupational experience in truck driving. OR Associate's degree from an accredited institution AND six (6) years of occupational experience in truck driving.
  • Current Class A California Driver License with Double Trailer, Triple Trailer, and Tank Vehicle endorsements.
  • Clean Driving record. Must Clear DMV verifications before hire
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students

Preferred:
  • Teaching experience in truck driving, preferably at the college level
  • Ability and willingness to teach in a traditional classroom and in an outdoor classroom setting
  • Current technology skills related to teaching the discipline; a willingness to pursue future technological developments; and a commitment to integrating technology into the curriculum
  • Familiarity with the use of computers in the classroom
  • Ability to relate the practical and the theoretical aspects of truck driving to the student
