Position Summary
The University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) educates aspiring physicians to be justice-minded, global citizens using a community-based, distributed model of education, which fosters inclusion, discovery, and innovation. The UIWSOM invites applications for Part-time Standardized Patient.

The Part-time Standardized Patient works on an as needed basis and must maintain a professional manner when interacting with student learners, faculty, supervisors and peers. Standardized Patients may work a few times a year to a few times a month. The position involves the use of individuals trained to portray the roles of patients, family members or others to allow student learners to practice physical exam skills, history taking skills, communication skills and other exercises.

Description of Job Duties
The major responsibility of this position is to portray all of the characteristics of a real patient, simulating the signs and symptoms of a particular disorder.

Standardized patients are given their cases to practice ahead of time. Standardized patients will often be physically examined by students and faculty as part of the medical students learning experience.

  • Demonstrate flexibility and reliability with scheduling and assignments
  • Be comfortable having repeated physical examination maneuvers performed on self by student learners
  • Will be required to wear a hospital gown with only undergarments underneath to simulate a real-life patient
  • Some disrobing may be required
  • No invasive examinations are performed; no medications given; no sharps are used
  • Will be required to be video and audio taped and/or observed live through an observation window or video monitor
  • Will be asked to simulate all aspects of health scenarios, including medical history of current problem, affect/behavior and physical findings, in a standardized, accurate, and reliable manner
  • Will be asked to accept ongoing feedback from facilitators so that it can be incorporated into the case simulation for learning purposes
  • All other duties as requested

Required Education
High School Diploma or its equivalent

Required Work Experience
Some prior work experience required

Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience as a standardized patient in a medical school environment

Work Hours
This position involves flexible hours so applicants must be available as needed. Some work assignments are provided last minute; therefore, applicants should be available with short notice of job assignment.

Work location is subject to change based on need.

Physical Demands
Standardized patients will often be physically examined by students and faculty as part of the medical students learning experience.

1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands and vision for office equipment such as computers; talk or hear; moderate telephone usage.
2. Work in office environment as well as classroom environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
3. The standardized patient must be able to occasionally walk up stairs with reasonable accommodation.
4. The standardized patient must be able to sit and/or lay upon an examining table with reasonable accommodation.
